South Africa grants visa exemptions to passport holders from certain countries for specific periods. A full list of visa-exempt countries, passport categories, and permitted lengths of stay is available on the Department of Home Affairs website. Travellers are advised to check this information regularly, as it is subject to change.
Travellers whose country of residence is not included in the visa exemption list are required to apply for a tourist visa prior to travel.
Visa requirements vary by country and may change without notice. A visa application fee applies and is reviewed annually. Visas are not issued at South African ports of entry, so travellers must ensure they apply for the correct visa category.
Travellers from countries eligible for the South African e-Visa can apply through the South African Department of Home Affairs eVisa portal.
Travellers who are not eligible for the e-Visa can submit applications through VFS Global, an official partner of the Department of Home Affairs for visa applications.
We recommend applying for the short-term visitor visa, sub-category conference visa. However, if this visa type is not available for your country of citizenship as an option or your visit will be linked to other activities, both the e-Visa and VFS Global portals provide detailed instructions to help travellers determine which visa type to apply for.
If you are unsure about your visa requirements, please contact your nearest South African mission or consulate, or consult your local Department of Home Affairs or official travel advisory.
Please apply for your visa well in advance, as processing times may vary from approximately 7 days to 120 days (4months), depending on various factors, including application volumes, the completeness and accuracy of your application, and your country of residence.
